Kauai 2008

Overall, Craig and I both agree that this was the best trip we’ve ever been on.

Of course, getting married & having a perfect wedding & reception helped, but we had so much fun w/ our families and each other… my sides and face still hurt from laughing and smiling so much!

Every night Craig and I would go down to the beach and look at the stars. This was one of the best parts of the trip.

We got tons of rest and relaxation time, but still found plenty of time to explore the entire island. Life has a way of moving a little slower on Kauai and we got really used to that!

Here is a link to some of the photos (be sure to read the captions if you want details!)
Kauai Trip

* Craig and I arrived on the island with mom, dad & Julie after a long 7 hour flight from Phoenix. Craig’s parents picked us up from the airport & drove mom, dad & Julie to the condos. First time they ever meet and we make them take a car ride together! Of course, it was fine & they all got along wonderfully.
* Craig and I picked up our Jeep which we ended up LOVING having for the week! We drove over 500 miles—which is a lot considering the island is something like 50 miles around!
* Just driving to the condo on the south shore was gorgeous! Hawaii is so beautiful.
* Checked in the condos, freshened up and went to eat at Brenneke’s, one of the only restaurants on the south shore. Great margaritas & seafood.
* Saw seals and sea turtles in the ocean on the walk to the restaurant! In fact, we saw tons of marine life. Scherry, Kim & Tate even saw a SHARK at Poipu beach! Needless to say, this hindered our desire for much swimming & snorkeling, but we did anyway.
* The condos we stayed in were great! Huge floor plans & beautiful property. Only complaint, no A/C but this is common around the island. It gets pretty warm in the afternoons, but it’s gorgeous the rest of the day. It did take us Arizonans a bit to get used to the humidity, though!
* The other interesting thing about Kauai is that there are wild roosters & chickens all over. Craig’s Dad loved the roosters and took tons of pictures of them.

* Craig and I had an appointment to get our marriage license at the County Building
* Hit the beach w/ everyone—the beach is amazing on the South Shore—and of course it’s almost always sunny down there. It rains a lot on the rest of the island. Saw a turtle sunning himself on the beach!
* Craig, Scherry, Tate & I took a helicopter tour of the island. Of course there are NO words to describe this! This was one of the highlights of the trip. It wasn’t too scary except that our pilot was an ex-military guy who fought in Korea! He was a little old… but Colonel Bill was great! The Na’apali Coast was especially beautiful. We saw where they filmed Jursassic Park, South Pacific, and even Tropic Thunder!
* Met up with everyone for the luau at the Sheraton. A few mai tais, tons of food & entertaining show and we were done for the day!

* The big day!
* We all hit the beach in the morning… Kim even got in the water up to her knees! Ever since she saw Jaws, she’s been scared. Tate and Craig snorkeled & even boogie boarded.
* Around 4:15 we all loaded up and headed to the ceremony site. It was perfect. I can’t even think of a better way to describe it. Around 5:30 we were married and proceeded to take tons of pictures!
* Dinner at the beach house after the ceremony was a blast. The food was fantastic, wine & margaritas were flowing… we couldn’t ask for a better time w/ our families.
* At the end of the night, we all threw our Lei’s in the ocean—this is what you do if you want luck to bring you back to Kauai someday! We all threw them as hard as we could!

Sunday, October 5, 2008

* Since J & C had checked into the Mariott on Sat after the wedding, everyone came over to hang out at the pool & beach, Kalapaki Bay.
* The hotel was gorgeous, had 5 restaurants on the property (this is a big deal in Kauai as there are not restaurants & bars everywhere you turn like most resort areas), semi-private beach, amazing pool, great rooms… and Craig’s favorite thing: air conditioning! We were spoiled in our suite w/ 2 bathrooms, 2 patios, living room, kitchen, king sized bed and view of the ocean!
* Roger, Jan and Julie headed back to their condo & we had dinner with his Mom, Dad, Kim and Tate at Duke’s (a beach bar w great food) before they had to head to the airport

Monday, October 6, 2008

* Dad took us all deep sea fishing! Our tour guides, Jay & Allen were great, but Julie & I didn’t do so well w/ the sea sickness… I have never had a problem before, but this boat was small & the waves were big. Needless to say, it was an adventure! The boys didn’t catch anything big, but Craig did catch one ??? a Skip-Jack tuna—which was pretty big itself. I honestly don’t know if I want to even see what gets caught on the size of hooks & bait we were trolling with!
* Had dinner at JJ’s on the beach w/ the Skinners before they headed out to the airport

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

* This was our first day to head out and explore the island!
* Drove to some small towns (Hanapepe, Waimea), lunch at the Waimea brewing company, then drove up Wiamea Canyon… Kauai’s “little grand canyon”. Of course, it was breathtaking!
* We ended the exploring around 4:00 at Polihale Beach—you have to drive 5 miles down a dirt/sand road to get here, and it’s very secluded. It’s the longest stretch of beach in Kauai and where the locals go, so you know it’s cool! We watched the sunset here.
* We were so tired after our long day that we ended up grabbing a pizza from Costco and calling it a night!

Wednesday, October 8, 2008

* Side note: we had already had so much fun and done so many of the things we wanted to do, it was amazing to sit back and think, “it’s only Wednesday!” We were glad to have many more days of fun to look forward to.
* This day we drove up to the north shore and saw the Kileua Lighthouse (and more seals and baby sea birds!), Princeville, Kapaa, Hanalei Bay and much, much more. Had a relaxing afternoon at the beach at Hanalei Bay, then headed back to the Mariott for some sushi.

Thursday, October 9, 2008

* Headed back down to the South Shore (our favorite area and beaches) to check out some of the sights… did a little hiking to beach, then saw the Sprouting Horn, and hit Poipu for the afternoon.
* Our big adventure of the day was renting boogie boards at Brenneke’s beach. We both caught a wave on our first try, but it was not pretty after that…. I lost my top, ended up w/ a mouthful of sand and swallowed a lot of salt water!
* Today we wanted to try to live like the hippies (which are of course, everywhere around Kauai!) so we showered (well, rinsed off) at the beach in the public outdoor showers and went to dinner. We thought we cleaned up decently!

Friday, October 10, 2008

* Slept in and headed down to the beach at our resort. Had a relaxing day NOT venturing out and had a fabulous dinner at Portofino—an upscale beach Italian place.

Saturday, October 11, 2008

* Our last day L Checked out in the morning and drove all the way back up the north shore to where the road ended… did some shopping and sightseeing, then back to the Mariott to clean up and pick up our bags.
* Headed back to the South Shore for shopping and dinner at Brenneke’s. Stopped at the Beach House to have a drink and watch the sunset and stumbled upon the end of a surfing contest. Very cool to watch. Ended the trip watching the sunset where we had gotten married a week earlier and then Jennifer threw her bouquet in the ocean for some more good luck!
* Headed to the airport for our 10:30 PM redeye flight (yuck!) and made it home uneventfully to Phoenix. We were really excited to see the dogs and they to see us!
